Democratic Concerns Rise Over Platner Before Maine Senate Primary

On Friday, concerns grew within the Democratic Party about Graham Platner’s turbulent personal history. Platner is the leading Senate candidate in Maine. As new reports emerged, party politicians, officials, and strategists discussed how to address the situation.

The New York Times reported several unsettling accounts from women who dated Platner. One woman mentioned that Platner acted in intimidating ways and noted he had a tattoo that appeared to be a Nazi symbol. This revelation followed earlier controversies involving Platner, such as inappropriate messages sent outside his marriage and offensive online comments.

Platner is a progressive candidate and a newcomer in politics. His past is causing concern among Democrats about his viability against Republican Senator Susan Collins in a crucial race. Democrats are anxious about the possibility of further damaging reports emerging.

Democratic senators expressed varying levels of concern. Maggie Hassan from New Hampshire called the new reports “serious and deserving scrutiny.” Others avoided discussing Platner or minimized the apprehensions.

Platner is expected to win the Democratic primary on Tuesday in Maine. On Thursday night, he confirmed he would not withdraw from the race. He appeared on MS NOW and admitted to not behaving well after his military service. He denied causing physical harm and claimed ignorance about the tattoo’s resemblance to Nazi imagery until it was recently covered up.
