Arctic National Wildlife Refuge Auction Yields Minimal Interest

An auction for oil leases in the Arctic National Wildlife Refuge concluded with limited success, with only 10 percent of available land attracting bids. This outcome falls short of former President Trump’s promises of economic growth from oil development in the area.

The sale generated approximately $3.7 million. About half of the proceeds came from Alaska’s state-owned economic development corporation. Most of the 58 tracts went without bids, and major international oil companies did not participate.

During his 2024 campaign, Mr. Trump advocated for opening the Arctic refuge for oil drilling, claiming it would reduce gasoline and grocery prices. He referred to the potential oil reserves as “liquid gold.” Supporters argued the region would offer a substantial financial benefit once drilling commenced.

Earlier sales during Mr. Trump’s first term, mandated by Congress, also faced minimal interest. President Joseph R. Biden Jr. suspended and later revoked the few leases that had been sold.

Kevin Book, managing director at ClearView Energy Partners, noted the unexpected low turnout. He highlighted the ongoing oil supply shortage exacerbated by the war in Iran. The federal government’s encouragement to drill made the lack of robust participation surprising.
