New bodycam footage reveals Mackenzie Shirilla’s father calling her a “dumb 18-year-old” while demanding police not question her after her arrest. The Ohio murder case is highlighted by Netflix’s documentary “The Crash.” Shirilla, now 21, serves two concurrent 15-year-to-life sentences for killing her boyfriend, Dominic Russo, 20, and their friend, Davion Flanagan, 19. Prosecutors say she deliberately crashed her Toyota Camry into a building in Strongsville, Ohio, on July 31, 2022.
Footage shows Steven Shirilla at the Strongsville Police Department on Nov. 4, 2022, after his daughter’s arrest. He insisted police were “not allowed” to question her, stating, “She’s 18, but she’s a dumb 18-year-old.” He emphasized the lawyer’s directive that police should not speak to her.
Bodycam video captures the aftermath of Shirilla’s arrest. Officers reviewed police records showing the Camry hit the PLIDCO building at 11792 Alameda Drive at about 6:15 a.m. Shirilla was flown to MetroHealth Medical Center; Russo and Flanagan were pronounced dead after being extricated from the wreckage.
A grand jury presentation showed Life360 data indicating the car traveled 90 mph in a 35 mph zone. The Event Data Recorder indicated no brakes applied. Initially classified as accidental, investigators later deemed the crash intentional.
Prosecutors argued Shirilla aimed to end her toxic relationship with Russo, with Flanagan an unintended victim. Judge Nancy Margaret Russo described the act: “This was not reckless driving. This was murder. She had a mission, and she executed it with precision. The mission was death.” Shirilla maintains the crash was accidental.
Following the Netflix series, Fox 8 reported that Steve Shirilla will not return to his teaching role at Mary Queen of Peace School. The Catholic Diocese of Cleveland cited privacy in personnel matters but confirmed Mr. Shirilla’s non-return.
