Senior linebacker Colton Zvonar approaches a significant season at Lincoln-Way East. It represents the end of an era for him and his family. His father, Rob Zvonar, is the only head coach in the football program’s history. The season might be his last with the Griffins, at least in the capacity of coaching his sons. Colton is the youngest of three brothers who have played for their father.
“It’s been three years but really my whole life in the making,” Colton said. “I’ve always known I’ll be the last one going out, and he could possibly go out with me. It’s just surreal this year is here now.”
With aspirations of winning a state championship, Colton and his father are also focused on enjoying their final season together. Rob Zvonar has considered retiring after his sons’ graduations, but he hasn’t made a final decision. “I’ll make a decision after the season is over. Right now, we’re just staying in the moment,” Rob explained.
Colton serves as a key leader for the Griffins, ranked third in the Daily Southtown preseason rankings. Rob Zvonar says, “He’s one of those guys with a lot of experience who has to play like a super senior.” Colton, a coach’s son, understands the game, providing leadership both on and off the field.
“The most fun thing is I’ve been around it for so long that he knows the football IQ is there,” Colton remarked about his father. On the challenges, he added, “I guess the worst thing is just getting yelled at.”
Senior defensive back Charlie Palmer, committed to Central Michigan, appreciates Colton’s football knowledge. “He’s the best leader, making sure all the linebackers know their jobs,” Palmer stated.
Colton admits that earlier in his high school career, he was less tough but has grown stronger by his senior year. Alongside Palmer, Colton is among the veterans on a team lacking the star power of previous years. Colton views their underdog status as an asset. “We’re going to be a scrappy team and fight for four quarters,” he said.
If it turns out to be his father’s final season, Colton sees it as extra motivation. “With the great career he’s had, why not make it one more great year?”
