Paul McCartney Opens Up About Friendship with John Lennon

Paul McCartney and John Lennon, with around 180 songwriting credits, were pivotal figures in 1960s pop culture. However, their collaboration ended as the Beatles, which included George Harrison and Ringo Starr, broke up.

More than five decades later, McCartney reflects on the “painful period” with Lennon, who passed away 45 years ago. In an NME interview, McCartney discussed the “hurtful” time in their friendship.

The rift began over management decisions for the Beatles. While McCartney supported his father-in-law, Lee Eastman, the others backed Allen Klein. This disagreement intensified when McCartney refused to sign a band agreement, leading to their dissolution in 1974.

Despite the tensions, McCartney, now 83, shared that his memories of Lennon remain “very good.” The pair weathered turmoil to reach reconciliation.

“It was annoying because you thought, ‘I’ve got to answer him back, what am I going to do?’ But I suddenly realized, ‘Wait a minute, this is John. This is the guy I’ve known since I was 16. That’s just what he does.'”

In 1975, a year after the band split, McCartney and Lennon mended their friendship through shared parenting experiences. McCartney admitted, “Even though it was a painful period, we kinda had to go through it, or someone would have robbed us.”

McCartney explained that the business disputes eventually led Lennon to acknowledge McCartney’s perspective on Klein. He noted, “I’d suffered because they all thought I was the nutter, I was the crook.”

Reflecting on what unfolded, McCartney said, “It was good to hear John say, ‘I think Paul might have been right.'” Lennon’s recognition brought some closure to the situation.
