On Sunday, the Tony Awards in New York turned the spotlight on several veterans of the iconic sketch comedy show, “Saturday Night Live” (S.N.L.). The show’s influence was evident during Broadway’s premier night, as Lorne Michaels, S.N.L.’s creator, shared the limelight with former stars.
The ceremony saw Darrell Hammond, who was part of S.N.L. from 1995 to 2009 and is now its announcer, announcing the event. Maya Rudolph, a member of S.N.L. from 2000 to 2007, was also present. She is currently acclaimed for her role as Mary Todd Lincoln in the comedy “Oh, Mary!” and presented the first award of the evening.
Rudolph, before awarding John Lithgow the prize for leading actor in a play for his performance in “Giant,” bantered with Cole Escola, “Oh, Mary!”‘s creator. She humorously remarked on the actors’ understanding of the power of words and the courage to vocalize them for monetary compensation.
During the event, S.N.L. alumni Rachel Dratch and Ana Gasteyer were also in the spotlight. Both competed for featured performance by an actress in a musical category. Dratch starred in the revival of “The Rocky Horror Show,” while Gasteyer shone in “Schmigadoon!” Despite their strong performances, the award went to Shoshana Bean for “The Lost Boys.” Notably, Dratch, who was on S.N.L. from 1999 to 2006, took on the role of the Narrator in “The Rocky Horror Show.” Previously, she earned a nomination for playing a U.S. president’s secretary in the feminist comedy “POTUS.”
