Vice President JD Vance announced on Monday his decision to refer Minnesota Governor Tim Walz and state Attorney General Keith Ellison to the Justice Department for a criminal fraud investigation. This referral involves allegations of misconduct in federally funded social services programs in Minnesota.
Vance stated, “Minnesota state officials are not above the law, and if they facilitated fraud, lied under oath about what they knew, or harassed and intimidated whistleblowers, they must face justice.” His announcement followed a letter and report from the Republican-led House Oversight Committee.
The report, published on the same day, accused Minnesota officials, including Walz and Ellison, of being “aware of widespread taxpayer fraud” but failing to act. The state officials have not responded directly to the referral, but their representatives dismissed the GOP report to other media outlets.
Additionally, the committee urged Vance, who leads the White House’s Task Force to Eliminate Fraud, to examine Minnesota’s social services programs. Vance took over the task force in February after President Donald Trump declared a “war on fraud” during his State of the Union address.
Following this declaration, Vance and Centers for Medicare & Medicaid Services Administrator Mehmet Oz halted federal Medicaid reimbursements to Minnesota. Walz criticized this as a “campaign of retribution,” asserting that the decision was unrelated to actual fraud.
During Trump’s second term, federal focus on Minnesota increased due to fraud allegations connected to daycare centers. The state clarified in January that the facilities accused of impropriety were not acting illegally. In April, federal law enforcement agencies conducted raids under warrants related to the suspected misuse of taxpayer funds.
Trump and his supporters alleged that the state’s Somali community was at the heart of the fraud, a narrative Walz countered by supporting the raids. Walz remarked that the raids resulted from state agencies identifying and reporting irregular behavior.
This investigation is not the first instance of federal scrutiny for Walz. Previously, the Justice Department under Trump launched a probe into Walz for allegedly obstructing federal immigration enforcement, alongside Democratic Minneapolis Mayor Jacob Frey. Walz criticized these actions as politically motivated.
