Ukraine launched one of its most extensive aerial attacks on Russia, deploying hundreds of drones and resulting in at least six fatalities. This marks a significant intensification of Kyiv’s military operations against Russia, which have targeted both military industries and energy facilities. Additionally, Ukraine has inflicted damage on major establishments like the massive warehouses of Wildberries, a leading Russian online retailer, thus bringing the war close to the Russian populace.
The conflict intensified with Russia launching retaliatory strikes against Ukraine. Russian drone attacks destroyed homes and set ablaze Kyiv’s significant book market. The Russian Ministry of Defense reported destroying 822 Ukrainian drones overnight, with 600 of those approaching Moscow. Moscow Mayor Sergei Sobyanin confirmed a significant portion of these drones were intercepted within the Moscow region. Unfortunately, an 83-year-old man’s death emerged from a Ukrainian drone hitting a private residence in the area.
In the southwestern Rostov region of Russia, a drone strike involving over 150 drones led to the deaths of five people as well as extensive property damage, igniting a forest fire.
Simultaneously, Russian missile attacks struck Kryvyi Rih, Ukraine, killing two and injuring 14 others, as noted by President Volodymyr Zelenskyy. Additional fatalities occurred in the city of Sumy and the Zaporizhzhia region, where aerial strikes continued to disrupt daily life.
Kyiv witnessed significant destruction as fires erupted due to missile strikes, severely damaging various infrastructures, including one of the city’s notable book markets near the Pochaina metro station. President Zelenskyy pointed out that Russian ballistic missiles frequently target civilian infrastructure.
In response, Russia emphasized that it had focused on a metallurgical plant in Kryvyi Rih and military-industrial sites in Kyiv. They targeted a facility producing Flamingo missiles, crucial for Ukraine’s long-range attacks. Additionally, Kyiv confirmed using these weapons to strike a rocket facility in Samara, far from Ukraine’s borders.
Amidst these developments, a NATO-led operation took place when a Spanish F-18 fighter jet, part of the Air and Space Force, shot down a drone entering Romanian airspace. The drone was detected by surveillance systems near the city of Galati, north of Moldova. Following approval, the F-18 engaged and neutralized the drone. Drone remnants were later discovered in the Black Sea and near Constanta.
Moldova confirmed detecting a Shahed drone passing through its airspace. The ongoing incidents have prompted Romania and NATO to scale up aerial deployments for better security of the Eastern Flank. Reports indicate that Romanian defense forces have previously intercepted several drones in response to intensified Russian strikes against Ukraine.
