Gordie Howe International Bridge Set to Open Amid Controversy

The Gordie Howe International Bridge, which spans the Detroit River, is nearly ready for its inauguration. Soon to be opened, a ribbon-cutting ceremony is planned for Friday, while the bridge itself will welcome traffic later this month. This new bridge represents a collaborative effort between Canada and the U.S. state of Michigan.

Canadian Prime Minister Mark Carney announced the bridge’s imminent opening, despite previous threats from former U.S. President Donald Trump. Trump had attempted to delay the project’s progress by demanding that Canada hand over part ownership to the U.S. federal government, alongside other unspecified conditions.

Linking Windsor, Ontario, and Detroit, this new bridge holds great economic significance. The project, spearheaded by former Michigan Governor Rick Snyder, aims to alleviate congestion from the existing Ambassador Bridge and the Detroit-Windsor tunnel. Construction has been ongoing since 2018, financed entirely by the Canadian government. Canada expects to recoup its investment with interest through tolls.

Carney emphasized the bridge as a symbol of cooperation between Canada and the United States. He highlighted the positive impact on cross-border travel for Canadians and Americans alike, as well as commercial activities.

Senator Elissa Slotkin of Michigan endorsed the Canadian-backed initiative, describing it as a significant economic boost for her state. This development follows Trump’s negotiations regarding the United States-Mexico-Canada trade agreement, during which he adopted a firm stance and issued tariff threats. Carney has voiced criticism internationally against such economic coercion by the U.S.

Former Governor Snyder clarified through a Detroit News op-ed that ownership of the Gordie Howe Bridge is shared equally between Canada and Michigan. Canada financed the project, with Michigan and the U.S. benefiting from half-ownership without any initial investment.

This bridge will accompany the Ambassador Bridge, the busiest crossing between the U.S. and Canada, crucial for automobile trade. The Moroun family, owners of the Ambassador Bridge, previously tried to block the Gordie Howe Bridge through legal actions.
