“The View” co-host Whoopi Goldberg addressed the audience on Tuesday, responding to criticism about the New York Knicks’ loss following President Donald Trump’s attendance at the game. The Knicks, participating in their first NBA Finals game since 1999, faced the San Antonio Spurs at Madison Square Garden. Despite their previous success on the road against the Spurs, the Knicks fell with a final score of 115-111.
Trump, a native of New York and known as a long-time Knicks supporter, was present at the invitation of the Knicks owner, James Dolan. Following the loss, some fans voiced displeasure on the streets, attributing the defeat to Trump’s presence. Goldberg rejected these claims, stressing that the team’s performance was the reason for their loss.
“They were not playing great ball. That was on us,” she insisted, defending that Trump’s attendance didn’t influence the game’s outcome.
Goldberg highlighted how Trump’s visit caused disruptions due to increased security measures, which were felt throughout the city. However, she emphasized that blaming Trump was unwarranted.
Co-host Sunny Hostin suggested that Trump brought “bad karma” to the game, impacting the team’s vibe negatively. Despite disagreement, Goldberg reiterated that the Knicks’ gameplay held more responsibility for the loss than Trump’s presence did.
Hostin further criticized the logistical and financial implications of Trump’s attendance, alongside him being booed by the crowd, stating, “Don’t bring your bad karma vibe to New York!” Alyssa Farah Griffin, another co-host, opined that any president attending a game amidst a winning streak risks shouldering blame if the team loses, although she acknowledged Trump’s loyalty as a fan.
Previously, Goldberg had defended both Trump and New York Mayor Zohran Mamdani’s right to attend the game as fellow Knicks fans, emphasizing the inclusive nature of fandom irrespective of personal preferences. Goldberg stated, “I think anybody who’s a Knicks fan should be there. You earned the right as a Knicks fan.”
