Cubs Struggle Against Rockies in Coors Field

In Denver, the Chicago Cubs faced challenges when their offense continued to struggle against the Colorado Rockies. Despite playing in Coors Field, known for being hitter-friendly, the Cubs’ troubles persisted. In the series opener, they lost 7-3, failing to capitalize on opportunities.

Struggles from the Start

Right-hander Colin Rea had a rough start, allowing five runs in the initial two innings. He finished with seven runs on nine hits, including two home runs, and walked three batters in 4 2/3 innings. Manager Craig Counsell remarked, “We just didn’t do enough tonight.” The Cubs hit several balls well but crucial breaks eluded them.

Offensive Woes

Throughout the game, Cubs batters struggled, going 0-for-8 with runners in scoring position and leaving eight men on base. Their offense, plagued by inconsistency, scored three or fewer runs in four consecutive games. This is the second-longest such streak of the season.

A Forlorn Offense

Though the Rockies’ pitcher, Tomoyuki Sugano, left pitches over the plate, the Cubs failed to capitalize. They fouled off 14 pitches in the heart of the zone, significantly affecting their potential success. Counsell mentioned the critical need to seize such opportunities, saying, “That’s offense, and that’s hitting, and we certainly have to do a better job with it.”

Players’ Perspective

Despite their current predicament, Cubs players remain optimistic. Michael Busch highlighted their confidence, stating they believe in their ability to succeed at the plate. However, frustration is growing as they try to turn their luck and apply consistent pressure on opponents.

Path Forward

The Cubs look to regain their early season form when they had an impressive 20-3 stretch. Counsell emphasized the need to focus on each new game as an opportunity to improve. “There’s a lot of season in front of us, and that’s still how you have to show up every day,” he added, remaining hopeful about future games.
