Aaron Ford Wins Democratic Nomination for Nevada Governor

Aaron Ford, the Attorney General of Nevada, has secured the Democratic nomination for governor, as reported by The Associated Press. This victory positions him against Governor Joe Lombardo, one of the nation’s most at-risk incumbents from the Republican party.

Ford faced opposition from Alexis Hill, a commissioner from Washoe County. Despite this, he consistently led in polls, fundraising, and endorsements. Ford opted not to debate Hill, focusing instead on the upcoming contest with Lombardo and the state’s economic challenges.

Nevada stands as a key battleground state, known for its willingness to unseat incumbents during times of economic difficulty. In 2022, Steve Sisolak became the sole Democratic governor to lose a re-election bid, a defeat attributed to the backlash over his pandemic-era lockdown measures.

Ford, 54, hopes to leverage this dynamic in his favor, given the state’s high unemployment rates and gas prices. Democrats consider this race a prime chance to claim a governor’s seat.

Ford’s triumph marks another achievement in his unexpected ascent through Nevada’s political ranks. Raised in poverty in Texas, he attended college via a federal program designed for low-income students. During his early twenties, as a single father, he relied on food stamps and public housing. He believes his life’s journey will resonate with the state’s working-class voters, often key in determining election outcomes. His election would make him the first Black governor of Nevada.

“Tonight we offer a fresh start for Nevada — building an economy of the people, for the people, by the people,” Ford stated in his election night address. “On day one, we’re going to lower costs.”
