The San Antonio Spurs experienced a dramatic and unfortunate incident during Game 4 of the NBA Finals. As the team returned to their hotel, Knicks fans allegedly hurled an egg at NBA player Victor Wembanyama. Social media footage captured this moment, showing the egg thrown towards him as security ushered him into a New York City hotel. This act was the latest in several controversial events involving Knicks fans recently.
Following the Spurs’ Game 3 win, social media displayed Knicks fans engaging in altercations with Spurs supporters beyond the arena. In some instances, Spurs fans had their jerseys forcefully removed, prompting Wembanyama’s reaction. He emphasized the importance of respect, saying, “My thoughts of course [are] that we can’t forget it’s a game. We’re just playing a game out there. I am all for passion, but [with] the respect of each other. It’s unacceptable.”
Wembanyama was not alone in his condemnation. ESPN host Mike Greenberg shared similar views on “Get Up,” addressing the egg incident and altercations. “If you’re throwing eggs at Victor Wembanyama and beating up people… threatening… or doing anything to people who are wearing Spurs jerseys, just know that you are a disgrace. You’re not disgracing this city, you’re disgracing yourself and everyone who knows you,” Greenberg stated.
Greenberg reiterated that actions like these should not require explanation, “And that should go without saying. We live in a world now where somehow things don’t go without saying anymore. You’re a disgrace and everyone around you who knows you.”
Before this, a watch party in New York turned violent after Game 3, as the Spurs secured a 115-111 victory. Multiple brawls unfolded in Bryant Park. The New York Police Department reported 21 arrests, with 13 individuals charged with disorderly conduct and eight charged with assaulting officers, criminal possession of weapons, and menacing.
This year marks the Knicks’ first NBA Finals appearance since 1999, a series they lost to the Spurs. New York has not claimed an NBA championship since 1973. The 2026 NBA Finals will continue in San Antonio with Game 5, and if needed, return to New York for Game 6 on Tuesday.
