Zlatan Ibrahimovic Weighs In on 2026 FIFA World Cup Group L

The 2026 FIFA World Cup has kicked off, setting the stage for new surprises and insights. Zlatan Ibrahimovic, known for his prowess on the field, is taking on a new role as a studio analyst for FOX Sports. In his debut, he shared his thoughts on the World Cup’s Group L.

When asked about which group stood out to him, Zlatan’s response was direct. He pointed to Group L, taking a moment to highlight the favorites and identify a team he considered the ‘punching bag.’

Ibrahimovic said, “We have England. Is it coming home? We’ll see. We have Croatia. I have some roots from Croatia as well, so I’m supporting them in this tournament. We have Ghana. Big talent, let’s see what they bring. We have Panama. Unfortunately, in this group, I think they will be the punching bag.”

He anticipates England and Croatia will compete for the top position, with Ghana potentially disrupting their plans. However, he views Panama as the underdog with slim chances of advancing.

Group L includes England, Croatia, Ghana, and Panama. England ranks No. 4 in FIFA’s global standings, Croatia holds the No. 11 slot, while Panama is at No. 34. Ghana, at No. 73, remains a considerable distance behind these ranks.

The group’s pivotal match is set between Thomas Tuchel’s England and Croatia on June 17 in Arlington, Texas. This match serves as a rematch of the 2018 semifinal where Croatia emerged victorious in extra time. Ibrahimovic sees this matchup as decisive for the group.

Ghana enters the tournament after a 5-1 defeat to Austria in March and a 2-0 loss to Mexico in May, raising questions about their potential to surprise. Panama, meanwhile, struggled with a 6-2 loss to Brazil in May and narrowly won against the Dominican Republic, a team ranked 144th by FIFA, with a 4-2 score on June 3.

Zlatan Ibrahimovic retired in 2023 as Sweden’s top scorer, with 62 goals to his name. Over his career, he scored more than 560 goals, placing him 15th on the all-time list. His career saw him win 34 major trophies and play for top clubs including Ajax, Juventus, Inter Milan, Barcelona, AC Milan, PSG, and Manchester United.

Now, his bold personality and extensive experience enrich FIFA World Cup coverage as he joins the broadcast team at FOX.
