American Airlines Resumes Flights to Haiti, Expands Service to Venezuela

American Airlines will resume daily nonstop flights between Miami and Cap-Haïtien, Haiti starting November 1. The decision follows a more than a yearlong suspension of flights to Haiti, where the airline had previously operated for over five decades.

In December 2024, the airline paused services to Port-au-Prince due to the Federal Aviation Administration’s ban after aircraft encountered threats from gang gunfire. Cap-Haïtien’s international airport, first serviced by the airline in 2014 following runway repairs, also experienced service suspension amidst the COVID-19 pandemic.

Prime Minister Fils-Aimé announced this development on the sidelines of the FIFA World Cup, demonstrating Haiti’s growing presence in international sports and connections.

American Airlines will utilize a Boeing 737 with 172 seats for this route. This move coincides with the ongoing suspension of flights to Haiti’s main airport, Toussaint Louverture International in Port-au-Prince. Spirit Airlines had been the sole commercial carrier operating into Cap-Haïtien until the stoppage.

Haitians have been facing high costs due to limited airline options, relying on Haiti-based Sunrise Airways or layovers in the Turks and Caicos and The Bahamas. Recently, Zed Airlines and Dominican airspace adjustments have assisted in easing this travel burden.

Haiti represents the largest market in the Caribbean by passenger demand not currently served by a U.S. carrier, American Airlines stated, highlighting the significant Haitian-American communities in South Florida.

American Airlines is also expanding service to Venezuela with daily flights from Miami to Maracaibo beginning July 14. The airline’s efforts to reconnect families will support economic avenues and strengthen South Florida’s ties with both communities.

Miami-Dade County Mayor Danielle Levine Cava emphasized how these routes reinforce Miami International Airport’s status as a prominent international hub. Juan Carlos Liscano, Vice President of Operations at MIA, noted that American Airlines holds the most comprehensive network linking the Caribbean and Latin America with the rest of the world.

Acknowledging a vast service network, American Airlines continues to cater to various destinations across the Caribbean and Latin America, reflecting its commitment to regional connectivity.
