Damage and Recovery
Residents in Illinois and Indiana are dealing with the aftermath of tornadoes that ravaged their homes and neighborhoods on Friday. The storms impacted communities south of Chicago, with cleanup efforts underway. Utility companies caution that power restoration could extend into the following week.
These storms resulted in considerable damage, ripping roofs from buildings, flattening homes, and downing numerous trees and power lines. As a consequence, hundreds of thousands faced power outages, and air traffic experienced disruption. Officials confirmed no reports of fatalities or life-threatening injuries, although several individuals received treatment for minor injuries.
Affected Areas
Tornado damage affected towns like Merrillville and Hebron in Indiana, and Streator in Illinois. Authorities examined the damage on Friday, preparing to declare emergencies necessary for securing recovery funds. In Merrillville, one resident, Marsha Smith, described the chaos as she and neighbors took refuge under a stairwell, praying for the storm to pass.
Friday morning brought a grim sight for residents, with more than 200 buildings reportedly damaged, including some that were destroyed. Streets were blocked by downed trees and power lines; part of a high school’s roof was torn away. Multiple agencies from the region assisted in assessing and responding to the damage.
In Streator, emergency crews found nearly a dozen homes had suffered damage, with some destroyed. Mayor Tara Bedei expressed gratitude for residents’ safety and praised emergency personnel’s swift response. A reunification center and shelter were established for displaced individuals.
Impact on Power and Transport
The storms left about 180,000 Illinois residents without power on Friday afternoon. In Indiana, around 115,000 homes and businesses faced outages. Efforts continue to restore power, with Commonwealth Edison aiming to resolve most outages by Saturday evening.
Flights were particularly disrupted at Chicago’s airports and in other cities like Philadelphia and New York. The Northeast and mid-Atlantic regions struggled with high heat and humidity, further impacting air traffic.
Weather and Safety
A prior storm on Wednesday resulted in a fatality at a homeless encampment in Des Moines, Iowa, due to strong winds. That incident underscores the severe weather challenges the Midwest faced last week.
