The United States men’s soccer team is playing its first World Cup game on home soil in 32 years at SoFi Stadium against Paraguay. The match is currently broadcast live on Fox and Telemundo.
First Half Dominance by the U.S.
Folarin Balogun, a U.S. striker, has proven to be a key player by scoring twice. He celebrated with his teammates after his second goal secured a 3-0 lead over Paraguay during a dominant U.S. first half. Christian Pulisic assisted on Balogun’s first goal, then was subbed out by Sebastian Berhalter at the start of the second half. Pulisic did not appear to be injured.
The U.S. took an initial lead in the seventh minute when Paraguay’s Damian Bobadilla accidentally deflected a ball off a Weston McKennie pass, resulting in an own goal.
Paraguay’s Mauricio scored in the 73rd minute by finding space and sending a shot past U.S. goalkeeper Matt Freese, making the score U.S. 3, Paraguay 1.
World Cup Celebration and Atmosphere
The opening ceremony invigorated fans with performances by Katy Perry, Future, Tyla, and Rema at Los Angeles Stadium. The vibrant scene included thousands of fans from both the U.S. and Paraguay, celebrating the event with music, chanting, and colorful attire. Despite controversies surrounding ticket prices and travel bans, the spirit of the competition remained upbeat.
Expectations and History
The 2026 tournament marks the first World Cup hosted by three countries. Delegates from the U.S., Mexico, and Canada competed against Morocco’s bid to host, ultimately winning the rights with their collaborative offer.
Support and Enthusiasm
Fans from across the country—including Anna Carter who advocated for soccer to be termed ‘football’—demonstrated strong support. Guillermo Ramirez, having traveled from Paraguay, eagerly awaited his team’s performance. Chris Richards and other players are poised for success, aided by enthusiastic crowds.
