Convicted Killer Mackenzie Shirilla Takes On Prison Job Amid Life Sentence

Mackenzie Shirilla, convicted of a fatal 2022 crash, now has a job in prison. Ohio prison officials confirmed her role to Fox News Digital. She works as a food service worker at the Ohio Reformatory for Women. Tara Nickle, a correction warden assistant, and public information officer, provided this information. The specifics of her assignment remain undisclosed due to Ohio public-records exemptions.

The case continues to draw public interest following Netflix’s show, The Crash. Prosecutors described the crash as intentional, labeling Shirilla a ‘hell on wheels’ driver. A previous case detail includes a father-to-be who awoke from a coma to disclose that Shirilla crashed the car deliberately before he succumbed to his injuries.

Shirilla, now 21, serves two concurrent sentences of 15 years to life for causing the deaths of Dominic Russo, 20, and Davion Flanagan, 19. Prosecutors claim Shirilla deliberately drove her Toyota Camry into a building in Strongsville, Ohio, on July 31, 2022.

Police data show her car traveling at 90 mph in a 35 mph zone. Event Data Recorder details revealed full acceleration with no brake use before the collision. Initially, the deaths were considered accidental. However, investigators later classified the crash as intentional. Prosecutors suggested Shirilla’s motive was to end her troubled relationship with Russo, with Flanagan as an unintended casualty.

The Netflix series The Crash has rekindled interest in the case. Following the docuseries, Shirilla’s legal team sought an appeal from the Ohio Supreme Court. They argue that Shirilla suffers from Postural Orthostatic Tachycardia Syndrome (POTS), which might have caused her to lose consciousness during the crash. Her attorneys contend this aspect was insufficiently examined during the trial. They believe further investigation and expert testimony on POTS could be vital.

Cuyahoga County Prosecutor Michael O’Malley maintains that Shirilla intentionally committed murder.
