A group of young activists stood accused of conspiring to threaten University of Michigan officials over their stance on divestment from Israel. Following charges filed earlier this week, the accused individuals were released on bond after a court appearance.
Among the defendants, Zainab Hakim, Paige Feyock, Jonathan Zou, and Colin Weger appeared before U.S. Magistrate Judge Anthony Patti. They pleaded not guilty to the charges. The court ordered their release on bond, requiring them to surrender their passports, avoid contact with the alleged victims and each other, and adhere to GPS monitoring and travel restrictions.
The FBI’s Director announced seven arrests connected to the case, with the accused alleged to have contacted individuals they believed financially supported Israel, aiming to intimidate them following the attacks in Israel in October 2023. Allegations include spray-painting messages on the Jewish Federation building and setting up fake corpses at a Regent’s home.
According to prosecutors, the defendants defaced properties with phrases such as “Free Palestine” and “Intifada,” performed acts of vandalism, and shared documentation of their activities online. The indictment outlined plans of harm, including alleged discussions between defendants on using poison and other means against targets.
One defendant, Ahmet Korkaya, is set for a detention hearing in Wisconsin. He allegedly communicated intentions to harm a target’s family members, and made threats towards those within his network potentially cooperating with law enforcement.
Prosecutors have charged those involved with various offenses, including witness intimidation. If convicted, Hakim and Feyock could face substantial prison time and fines. Other defendants, including Jonathan Hongru Zou and Alexander Sepulveda, were accused of additional acts of vandalism on university property.
The case highlighted tension over the university’s financial ties and the broader geopolitical context. The defendants, if found guilty, face significant legal repercussions.
