Tyler Mane, a former professional wrestler and actor, revealed his breast cancer diagnosis. Mane, recognized for his roles in ‘X-Men’ and ‘Halloween,’ shared his condition publicly to highlight the often-overlooked risk of breast cancer in men.
In a video posted on his social media, Mane announced, ‘I have some bad news. I start chemo today.’ He emphasized that breast cancer affects one in 750 men during their lifetime, noting, ‘I’m one of them.’
Breast cancer is predominantly associated with women, but men share the risk due to the small amount of breast tissue present in everyone. According to the Mayo Clinic, during puberty, women develop more breast tissue, yet the disease’s biological foundation exists in all genders.
Male breast cancer symptoms typically include a hard, painless lump behind or near the nipple. Other signs might involve skin dimpling, nipple retraction, or discharge, as noted by medical experts.
Globally, male breast cancer is rare, comprising less than 1% of all cases. Routine screenings like mammograms are not common for men, making late detection more likely compared to women. Mane underscored the importance of discussing the condition, stating, ‘Because it’s rarely talked about, it’s usually found at later stages and has worse outcomes. I want to change that.’
Medical data aligns with Mane’s concerns about late-stage breast cancer detection in men. Although it can occur at any age, it frequently affects older men, the Mayo Clinic reports.
Treatment for men generally reflects that for women, often including surgery to remove breast tissue, followed by chemotherapy, radiation, or hormone therapy based on the cancer’s progression.
Mane uses his platform to encourage conversations about male health and promote early detection. He concluded his message asking viewers to aid in spreading awareness, saying, ‘Follow, like, and share, and come along for my journey to kick this thing in the ass. Send this to 10 of your friends and have them follow me, because people need to hear this.’
