Russia launched a massive overnight attack on Ukraine’s largest cities, leading to the death of at least 11 people and significant damage to iconic landmarks. Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy confirmed the assault, which involved hundreds of drones and numerous missiles targeting Kyiv and Kharkiv.

The attack followed separate phone calls between Zelenskyy, Russian President Vladimir Putin, and U.S. President Donald Trump. These discussions hint at ongoing diplomatic efforts by Washington to halt the conflict initiated by Russia’s full-scale invasion in February 2022. The Ukrainian government’s reports indicate severe casualties and damage, especially in Kyiv. Mayor Vitali Klitschko noted that five people in Kyiv were killed, with at least 30 others wounded, including young children. Notably, the renowned Kyiv-Pechersk Lavra, an 11th-century monastery complex, was set ablaze. Located within this UNESCO World Heritage site, the Dormition Cathedral suffered damage. Metropolitan Epiphanius of the Orthodox Church of Ukraine condemned the attack and called for global prayers to protect the site.
The religious site holds profound historical and cultural significance, serving as a pilgrimage destination for centuries. The aftermath of the attack has drawn comparisons to the hypothetical bombing of Notre Dame in Paris, as stated by French Foreign Minister Jean-Noel Barrot.
Russian Claims and Military Activity
Russia’s Defense Ministry claimed that targeted strikes were aimed at defense and industrial facilities in Kyiv, Kharkiv, and Dnipro. They included sites reportedly producing drones and cruise missiles components. The Ministry further alleged that Ukraine’s Patriot air defense missile might have caused the damage to the monastery complex, a claim made without supporting evidence.
Ukraine’s air force detailed that 70 missiles and 611 drones were launched overnight, with efforts underway to intercept them. Preliminary data suggested significant hits across the country, highlighting the relentless nature of the ongoing conflict.
