More than 80 years after Ukraine’s Dormition Cathedral was destroyed during World War II, it has once again suffered significant damage. On Monday, a series of Russian missile and drone attacks targeted multiple locations, including this revered religious site in Kyiv. Authorities reported that these assaults resulted in the deaths of 11 people and injuries to dozens more.
The Dormition Cathedral, an important destination for Christian pilgrims, experienced severe damage after two drones hit the historic monastic complex. President Volodymyr Zelensky described the attack as one of the most significant crimes against Christian culture by Russian forces. Videos captured by witnesses show firefighters using cranes to douse the flames engulfing the cathedral’s white walls.
Throughout the ongoing conflict, many Ukrainian religious sites, museums, and cultural landmarks have been damaged or completely destroyed. However, the assault on the Dormition Cathedral has been particularly impactful. President Zelensky emphasized its cultural importance in a social media post following the incident.
In addition to the cathedral, the strikes also targeted several museums. Significant damage affected a film studio and an extensive costume collection as well, according to Ukraine’s Culture Ministry.
