Reflecting Pool Turns Green Despite Renovation
President Trump envisioned a pristine Reflecting Pool at the Lincoln Memorial. Reality presented a challenge. A $14.2 million initiative aimed at enhancing the pool with new waterproofing and purification systems witnessed algal blooms just days after completion. Photosynthesis altered the scene, painting sections of the pool green.
The recent project tackled leaks and algal issues before the forthcoming 250th anniversary of the United States. However, hot, humid weather accelerated algae growth.
Project Details and Government Response
The Interior Department, responsible for site oversight, refrained from commenting promptly. Spokeswoman Katie Martin indicated last week that construction left supply lines unused for weeks, leading to residual algae, which workers are actively removing.
President Trump declared last month that his team’s efforts transformed the long-neglected site. He emphasized the adoption of “American flag blue” waterproofing material as part of the refurbishment.
Contracts and Implementation
In response to the urgent need due to the 250th celebration, Trump’s administration awarded contracts directly to two vendors, avoiding competitive bidding. Atlantic Industrial Coatings, a Virginia company, handled waterproofing and concrete sealing. Ohio-based Greenwater Services upgraded water-purification systems.
Atlantic finished its tasks on June 4. The pool refilled promptly. Greenwater’s installation status remains uncertain.
Park Service and Pearl Purity Water Solutions workers, contracted since 2021, managed algae removal efforts by skimming the surface on Sunday.
Visitor Reactions
While Park Service continued clearing algae, tourists ambled around the landmark. Bonnie Garvin from Georgia expressed indifference, noting visitors don’t swim there. Conversely, Jessica Lea from Oregon expressed disappointment during her inaugural visit.
Overall sentiments from visitors highlighted contrasting views on the pool’s condition and its impact on their experience.
