Alaska Senate Candidate Disqualified from Primary Ballot

A candidate with the same name as Republican Sen. Dan Sullivan was disqualified from appearing on Alaska’s primary ballot. The decision was made by an Alaska election official this week. The candidate, Daniel J. Sullivan, faced allegations of attempting to confuse voters.

Daniel J. Sullivan had announced intentions to run against the incumbent Senator a few weeks ago, igniting confusion and concern among Republicans ahead of the August primary. Elections Director Carol Beecher stated in a letter that Sullivan’s candidacy was not a genuine bid for the U.S. Senate but an attempt to mislead voters. He made efforts to register as simply ‘Dan Sullivan’, although he had never voted under that name. Additionally, he attempted to use ‘S’ as a middle initial, mirroring that of the sitting senator.

Beecher elaborated on the similarities between the two campaign websites, pointing out a deliberate mimicry of Sen. Sullivan’s campaign. The incumbent senator highlighted the situation earlier this month, accusing Democrats of involvement in efforts to deceive Alaska voters. Meanwhile, the National Republican Senatorial Committee and local Republicans urged the removal of Daniel J. Sullivan from the ballot. Republican Lt. Gov. Nancy Dahlstrom initiated an investigation into the candidacy last week.

Beecher revealed that a political consultant associated with Daniel J. Sullivan had connections to the Democratic Party and Sen. Sullivan’s expected Democratic opponent, former Rep. Mary Peltola. Daniel J. Sullivan has a 30-day window to appeal the ruling.

The Senate race in Alaska is expected to be one of the more competitive contests this cycle, with Democrats aiming to take control of the chamber. This goal poses a challenge in Alaska, where President Trump secured a victory by 13 points in 2024.
