Cornell University has initiated an investigation following antisemitic comments made by student Austin Franco. He refused an internship with the Jewish-owned startup VryfID, reportedly stating his disinterest in working for a Jewish employer.
VryfID, founded by Gabe and Aiden Einhorn, aims to connect renters with landlords and prevent fraud. Gabe shared on social media that Franco declined a job offer due to the Jewish background of the company’s founders.
Not interested in working for a Jew. Thanks,Franco is alleged to have responded.
Cornell’s Office of Civil Rights is addressing the incident, which violates the terms of service on the Handshake job platform. The university condemns all forms of hatred and discrimination and emphasizes fostering an inclusive environment.
Franco’s comments were sent through Handshake after applying for a summer position at VryfID. Following the publication of his remarks, Franco claimed his experiences with Jewish people had been generally negative, both personally and online.
Gabe Einhorn expressed his concerns about generalizing people based on religion or race. He stated that such overgeneralization contributes to the hate circulating in the world today.
Franco was expected to participate in a podcast to discuss the issue but withdrew, pending the university’s handling of the situation. Despite his absence, he maintains his commitment to his beliefs.
Cornell continues its commitment to addressing antisemitism while promoting a respectful community for all its members.
