Former Judge Everett Wess has secured the Democratic Senate nomination in Alabama, a state known for its strong Republican support. This nomination comes in the race to replace Republican Senator Tommy Tuberville, who is currently running for governor.
Wess emerged victorious against small business owner Dakarai Larriett in the Democratic Senate runoff. As reported by the Associated Press, Wess and Larriett were the top two candidates in the previous primary, which featured four contenders. Neither candidate received more than 50% of the vote in the primary, leading to the runoff election on Tuesday.
Wess is anticipated to face a challenging battle in the general election. The Republican nominee, Representative Barry Moore, received backing from former President Donald Trump and defeated former Navy SEAL sniper Jared Hudson in their GOP runoff election.
Alabama has a long history of Republican dominance in Senate races. Aside from former Democratic Senator Doug Jones’ 2017 special election win, Democrats have not captured a Senate seat in the state for over thirty years.
Meanwhile, Tommy Tuberville, previously the head football coach at Auburn University, is campaigning for the governor’s office rather than seeking another term in the Senate. Paul Steinhauser, a politics reporter from New Hampshire, has been covering the campaign developments across the United States.
