A shooting at ChristianaCare Wilmington Hospital in Delaware on Tuesday resulted in one fatality and one injury. The shooter remains at large, according to Wilmington Police Chief Wilfredo Campos.
The incident occurred at 3:30 p.m. Officers arrived to find the victims but did not locate the shooter. Chief Campos withheld details of the victims’ identities and the survivor’s condition to respect the families involved. No description of the suspect or motive has been released. Campos emphasized that law enforcement is diligently working to identify and arrest the shooter.
The aftermath of the attack saw law enforcement personnel coordinating outside Wilmington Hospital. Hospital workers had to barricade themselves in rooms as officers secured each floor, according to Mayor John Carney. He expressed sorrow over the day’s events, calling it a tragic day for the city.
Governor Matt Meyer shared that his wife, Dr. Lauren Meyer, was present at the hospital for work when the shooting occurred. He commended the hospital staff as heroes for their commitment to saving lives under the circumstances.
U.S. Senator Lisa Blunt, representing Delaware, stated that she was briefed on the situation. She expressed her prayers for the community and gratitude for the quick response from law enforcement.
Wilmington, the largest city in Delaware, has a population exceeding 73,000. It is recognized as the ‘corporate capital of America’ due to the presence of many large corporations’ legal addresses.
