French tennis player Corentin Moutet attracted attention at the HSBC Championships when he made headlines for reasons beyond his performance on the court. After securing a win on Monday, Moutet’s on-court interview took a controversial turn. He dropped several F-bombs during his conversation with the reporter, which sparked reactions among fans and officials.
While Moutet’s comments seemed to be made in jest, the ATP did not find the humor in the situation and took action. In an official statement, the ATP communications office announced that Moutet would face a $40,000 fine for unsportsmanlike conduct.
“Following the use of profane language by Corentin Moutet during his post-match interview after his first-round match at the HSBC Championships at The Queen’s Club in London, the player has received a fine of $40,000,” the ATP explained.
Despite the penalty, Moutet plans to challenge the fine through the ATP rules appeal process.
The abrupt end to Moutet’s run at the Queen’s Club occurred on Thursday, when he suffered a straight-sets defeat to Spaniard Alejandro Davidovich Fokina. Although Moutet earned approximately $23,000 from his initial victories, his fine significantly impacts his earnings from the tournament.
This incident underscores the importance of maintaining professionalism even when under the spotlight. Whether Moutet will adjust his demeanor in future engagements remains uncertain, but it’s clear he will be more cautious next time a microphone is in his vicinity.
