The Los Angeles Police Department (LAPD) has released body camera footage of an officer-involved shooting that resulted in the death of a pet dog, causing international debate on police use of force. The incident occurred last Saturday and involved a two-year-old golden saint berdoodle named Jameson.
Jameson was shot outside an apartment where officers had responded to a report of a woman screaming. The police later discovered that the woman, Marie Marseille, was celebrating the New York Knicks’ victory in the N.B.A. championship.
The video footage compiles recordings from the body cameras of both officers who arrived at the scene. It shows them approaching the door of the apartment following a call from a neighbor. The neighbor had heard repeated cries of “Oh, my god” for 20 minutes and had requested a wellness check.
In the footage, officers can be seen standing by the apartment door. They knock and announce their presence as police officers just before 9 p.m., according to the timestamp. A woman, not identified in the video, answers the door with a barking gray dog wearing a blue shirt beside her.
The video reveals the officers asking the woman to restrain the dog. As the dog continues to bark, one officer unholsters his handgun, leading to the fatal shooting of the pet.
