Mr. Kushner visited the Meuse-Argonne American Cemetery, where he offered prayers for Jewish American soldiers who perished in World War I. This gesture aligned with his personal beliefs and highlighted his ongoing focus on the well-being of Jews in France today.
His family ties are notable, with his son Jared Kushner being married to Ivanka Trump, President Trump’s daughter. His arrival in France last July included a sharp critique of the country’s efforts to combat antisemitism. He argues the situation has since worsened and has advocated for the U.S. to provide refuge to French Jews, a view he feels is not shared by the French government.
These remarks, initially addressed to French President Emmanuel Macron, have strained his relations with the French Foreign Ministry. They have summoned Mr. Kushner twice to express their discontent over these interventions, although he did not attend the meetings. This diplomatic tension escalated to threats from French Foreign Minister Jean-Noël Barrot, who considered restricting Kushner’s access to French officials.
The dynamics between Kushner and his French counterparts underscore the challenges in balancing diplomatic relations and advocacy on international social issues.
