Hezbollah Conflict Hinders Iran-U.S. Peace Efforts

The conflict between Israel and Hezbollah, initially considered a secondary aspect of the American-Israeli stance on Iran, has emerged as a primary barrier to resolving tensions. Recent developments have highlighted the significance of Lebanon in these dynamics.

On Friday, a preliminary agreement between Iran and the United States almost fell apart. This was largely due to escalating hostilities between Hezbollah and Israel. The fighting intensified, disrupting new talks between Tehran and Washington held in Switzerland.

Although neither side offered an official reason for the postponement, three diplomats, who requested anonymity, revealed that Iranian withdrawal from the talks was a reaction to Israeli strikes in Lebanon.

“Iran’s new leadership views Lebanon as integral to its national security,” stated Mohanad Hage Ali, a senior fellow at the Carnegie Middle East Center in Beirut. “Previous Israeli actions in 2024 paved the way for direct conflict with Iran.” He added, “For Iran, the ultimate goal is an Israeli withdrawal from Lebanon.”

This disruption marks the second time in recent weeks that the Lebanese conflict has derailed discussions between the United States and Iran. Earlier this month, Israeli airstrikes near Beirut led to Iranian missile launches toward Israel, prompting further retaliatory strikes from Israel across Iran.

These developments occurred soon after the United States and Iran signed a preliminary agreement aimed at ending their conflict. The agreement includes a pledge for “the immediate and permanent termination of military operations” in Lebanon and emphasizes the importance of preserving Lebanon’s “territorial integrity and sovereignty.”
