Catherine, Princess of Wales, has highlighted the importance of human connection in an increasingly digital world. In an essay published on Friday, she emphasized that children’s lives should not be dominated by screens. Her appeal comes shortly after the UK decided to ban social media use for children under 16.
The princess shared insights from her recent official visit to Reggio Emilia, Italy. She urges society to foster genuine relationships and experiences for children. Catherine stressed the need for activities that promote skills and feelings not replicable by digital means.
She wrote, “In an increasingly digitalized world, where so much of life is mediated through screens, the need for genuine human connection has never been greater.” Furthermore, she noted the importance of spending time in nature and engaging in creative activities to nurture awareness, empathy, humility, and love.
Her essay was featured on the website of the Royal Foundation Center for Early Childhood, which is associated with her charity endeavors. The royal family typically refrains from political discourse due to their ceremonial responsibilities, which makes the timing of Catherine’s statements after the UK government’s announcement significant.
