The European Parliament saw a heated reaction after approving a major change to the European Union’s migrant return policy. This move highlights Europe’s shift towards stricter immigration rules amidst increasing frustration from voters.
Chants of “Send Them Back”
The legislation passed with a majority vote of 418 to 218, with 30 abstentions, called the Return Regulation. It aims to expedite the deportation of third-country nationals unlawfully residing in the EU. A video of the session shows right-wing members applauding and chanting “send them back”, while left-wing lawmakers countered by chanting “shame on you”.
“The measure underscores Europe’s deep division over migration policies,” a member remarked.
Further Approval Needed
Before taking effect, the legislation still needs formal approval from the Council of the European Union and must be published in the Official Journal. However, it demonstrates European institutions are moving forward with policies previously considered politically sensitive.
Details of the New Rules
This new regulation would allow EU members to detain certain migrants for up to 24 months, with a potential six-month extension. It also proposes establishing “return hubs” outside the EU in third countries that agree to accept migrants with deportation decisions.
The right-wing politicians praised the Parliament’s decision. Italian Prime Minister Giorgia Meloni described the outcome as a “great success”, lauding the legislation as a “historic measure” for Europe. Right-leaning figures in France and Austria have expressed similar sentiments, suggesting that pressure from conservative groups is influencing EU policy.
Concerns and Criticism
Critics have accused lawmakers of dehumanizing migrants and eroding fundamental protections. Javi López, vice president of the European Parliament, criticized the session, calling it “disgraceful”. Another Italian MEP from the Green and Left Alliance termed the display “horrifying”.
Human rights organizations have issued warnings over the new regulation. UN human rights chief Volker Türk cautioned that these changes might expand detention practices and weaken safeguards against forced deportations.
