Iranian Coach Addresses World Cup Challenges Amid U.S. Travel Restrictions

Iran’s national soccer coach, Amir Ghalenoei, has expressed concerns over the travel constraints imposed by the United States during the FIFA World Cup. Despite these challenges impacting his team’s preparation, Ghalenoei remains hopeful that FIFA will intervene to ease these restrictions soon.

During a press conference in Inglewood, California, Ghalenoei shared his thoughts. “I am very glad that the Iranian nation is behind us,” he stated via an interpreter. He pointed out that travel limitations and visa denials have affected his players and staff. “This kind of behavior has hurt our people,” he emphasized, urging that peace should prevail and such practices should not be normalized in international events.

Ghalenoei highlighted the impact of these restrictions on his team’s training. Ahead of their match with Belgium, Iran was denied adequate time in Los Angeles, limiting crucial practice hours. “We needed to have 24 hours (in Los Angeles), but they gave us less than 16,” Ghalenoei noted.

“These constraints have made it very difficult for us,” he added, appealing for unity among other teams and coaches.

Iranian player Saeid Ezatolahi echoed his coach’s sentiments. “You cannot deny that our situation hasn’t been the same as all the other teams,” Ezatolahi remarked, highlighting the additional travel burdens faced by Iran.

Ghalenoei praised FIFA President Gianni Infantino’s efforts to advocate for lessened restrictions. He hopes the U.S. will grant his team earlier access to Seattle, where Iran is set to play its final group match against Egypt. “For the third game, they said, ‘In Seattle, you can do what you want,’” Ghalenoei informed, questioning why similar flexibility was missing for the previous matches.

Despite bureaucratic hurdles, Ghalenoei acknowledged improvements in customs processing, which allowed quicker transitions to their hotel in Los Angeles. Yet, concerns persist, including denied visas for several key Iranian staff members.

Ghalenoei has refrained from formal complaints to FIFA, choosing instead to openly discuss Iran’s grievances. Meanwhile, Belgian player Thomas Meunier empathized with the Iranian team, likening their situation to Ukraine amid the Russian conflict. He noted, “We usually don’t mix football with politics, but it’s quite challenging to separate the two.”
