The Milwaukee Bucks have made a significant move by trading two-time MVP Giannis Antetokounmpo and forward Bobby Portis to the Miami Heat. This marks the end of an era that saw the Bucks secure their first NBA title in 50 years. According to ESPN’s Shams Charania, the Heat will receive Antetokounmpo and Portis in exchange for Tyler Herro, Kel’el Ware, Jaime Jaquez Jr., and Kasparas Jakucionis. Additionally, the deal includes three future first-round picks, the No. 13 pick in Tuesday’s draft, a future pick swap, and a second-round pick.
The Boston Celtics and Miami Heat were the top contenders in the competition for Giannis as the NBA Draft approached.
This trade follows years of uncertainty for the Bucks after Mike Budenholzer, the coach who led them to a championship, left in 2023. The team’s situation worsened, leading to them missing the 2026 playoffs. Reports suggest the Bucks were open to offers for Giannis Antetokounmpo, as highlighted by their recent decline.
Giannis, now 31, played a crucial role in Milwaukee’s 2021 championship, establishing himself as one of the franchise’s legends. His accolades include being named one of the NBA’s top 75 players and winning two MVP titles, along with a Finals MVP. Despite this, the Bucks struggled to maintain post-title success and faced an injury-troubled 2025-26 season.
The Bucks decided to rebuild instead of holding onto an expensive and inflexible roster. Antetokounmpo’s trade was part of this strategy to seize value from his stature.
The Miami Heat stood out among several teams vying for Giannis, reflecting Pat Riley’s commitment to sacrificing future prospects to win another championship. Giannis represents the franchise cornerstone Riley has long sought.
