With the regular season yet to kick off, Jayden Daniels is already in the spotlight, but not for his on-field prowess. The New York Mets recently joined the widespread online jest aimed at the Washington Commanders’ quarterback after his cease-and-desist notice directed at LSU over the use of his name, image, and likeness.
Following a 4-1 victory against the Washington Nationals, who share the DMV area with the Commanders, the Mets posted on X, humorously saying, “Stopped at 4 out of respect for Jayden Daniels.” This comment referred to their game performance, poking fun at Daniels’ current predicament.
Daniels, a Heisman Trophy winner from LSU in 2023, reportedly found it “disrespectful” that head coach Lane Kiffin allowed DJ Pickett to wear his No. 5 jersey. On Thursday afternoon, Daniels took to social media to address the issue, stating, “I have been locked in on training camp and that’s been my number one focus. I have a lot of gratitude for my time at LSU and I’m proud of what my teammates and I accomplished there.” He added that he hoped for a private resolution to the dispute.
Despite his attempts to downplay the situation, Daniels continues to face online scrutiny as intense as any football defense. StubHub, a ticketing platform, even joked they will no longer sell tickets in groups of five out of “respect” for Daniels.
As Daniels concentrates on his role with the Commanders, his aim is for the only pressure he encounters once the season starts to be from his opponents on the field, rather than social media criticism.
