Kim Jong Un Calls for Naval Forces Expansion in North Korea

North Korean leader Kim Jong Un recently emphasized the need for a significant augmentation of the nation’s naval abilities. During a ceremony for a new destroyer, Kim proposed that North Korea should construct two large warships each year for the next five years.

Kim made these remarks at the commissioning event for a multipurpose destroyer at the port of Nampho, according to the Korean Central News Agency (KCNA). He advocated for ships comparable to the 5,000-ton Choe Hyon-class vessel to be produced annually, showcasing his ambition for naval enhancement.

In April, Kim oversaw the launch of two cruise missiles and three anti-ship missiles from the Choe Hyon destroyer. The vessel had successfully completed military operational tests over the past 14 months, as reported by KCNA.

Kim Jong Un had previously praised the Choe Hyon’s development as pivotal for boosting North Korea’s military capabilities, including operational reach and preemptive strike power.

Kim stated that the navy’s progress in nuclear capabilities is enhancing the country’s nuclear deterrence. Analysts have often viewed the navy as one of North Korea’s weaker military branches, making this buildup significant.

KCNA further reported Kim’s plans to deploy another destroyer, the Kang Kon, and larger strategic warships. The 5,000-ton Kang Kon faced initial setbacks during a failed launch in Chongjin but was successfully relaunched after repairs.

During the ceremony, Kim highlighted the need for modernized naval bases as an essential task. State media noted plans for new naval base constructions. Kim discussed upcoming changes to the navy’s status, role, and operational scope in a Workers’ Party meeting.
