States Celebrate 250th Anniversary Amid Partisan Debate

Amid a backdrop of partisan tensions, states across the U.S. are engaging in celebrations connected to the country’s 250th anniversary. While Washington hosts grand festivities, such as a military parade and the Great American State Fair, local planners work diligently to commemorate the event with their own stories and limited resources.

The Arizona 250th commission organized a mobile museum showcasing state and national history, complete with a replica of the Liberty Bell. These celebrations include festivals, parades, rodeos, and potlucks, reflecting each state’s unique contributions to the national narrative.

Outside the original 13 colonies, there is a challenge to relate back to 1776, especially amid President Trump’s call for ‘patriotic’ history—deepening partisan divisions around historical interpretation. For many observers, the hope is that the anniversary spurs positive local engagement, similar to the Bicentennial in 1976.

“There’s a big wave coming, and it’s going to paint a really sharp contrast with the dysfunction in Washington,” remarked John Dichtl, the president of the American Association for State and Local History.

State planners aim to foster local pride and community connection through historical recognition, despite political controversies.
