President Donald Trump has spoken out about what he described as the willful vandalism of the Lincoln Memorial Reflecting Pool. The pool recently underwent significant renovations, costing millions, in preparation for the country’s 250th anniversary celebrations.
Controversy Over Renovations
The focus is on the iconic pool on the National Mall, which was recently refurbished. The project included applying an “American flag blue” coating to the pool. Problems surfaced quickly when algae turned the water green and parts of the lining began to peel.
While officials claim vandals with sharp objects caused the damage, some independent analyses suggest environmental factors or application errors may be at fault. The issue quickly became a political debate over spending, accountability, and law enforcement.
Security around the pool has increased with fencing as preparations for upcoming events continue.
Trump Promises Legal Consequences
Through posts on Truth Social, Trump described the damage as intentional. He claimed vandals sliced a “350-foot gash” into the lining. Trump emphasized that legal action would be taken, highlighting severe penalties for destruction of federal property, referencing Title 18 U.S.C. 1361, which permits up to 10 years in prison for such offenses.
He stated, “Damaging or destroying property owned or controlled by the federal government is a federal offense under Title 18 U.S.C. 1361. Convictions can lead to prison sentences of up to 10 years, depending on the value of the damaged property.”
Increased Security and Investigations
The presence of law enforcement on the National Mall has intensified. The U.S. Park Police has started multiple investigations, increased patrols, and reviewed surveillance footage. Police reports show at least seven arrests and seven federal citations related to the pool’s condition.
Among those arrested was David Hearn, a 67-year-old cyclist, who denied vandalism claims. He argued that he merely attempted to examine already loose material in the water.
Inquiry into Construction Flaws
Despite the focus on alleged criminal acts, the rapid deterioration of the pool raises questions about construction integrity. Experts explain that issues like peeling and algae growth could result from poor surface preparation or moisture trapping. No forensic evidence of vandalism has been publicly presented yet, prompting technical scrutiny.
Environmental groups have voiced concerns too. The Center for Biological Diversity called for an investigation after discovering a dead duckling in the pool and others nearby. Crews are working to address these problems before the crowds gather for Independence Day celebrations.
