A new poll from The Economist/YouGov reveals that a majority of Americans perceive President Donald Trump as inattentive to the issues most important to them. The survey indicates that 60 percent of respondents believe Trump has neglected significant problems facing the country, highlighting ongoing concerns about his priorities.
As his administration moves forward with initiatives in foreign affairs, including dealings with Iran, Trump has faced criticism for his stance on national housing issues. Recently, he downplayed the importance of a housing bill aimed at combating rising housing costs, describing it dismissively as “a big yawn.” His remarks have drawn criticism from figures like Texas Democratic Congresswoman Julie Johnson, who emphasized her focus on addressing the housing crisis.
Trump has not committed to signing the housing bill, indicating a preference for the SAVE America Act. This stance occurs as Americans grapple with escalating home prices, which are a significant concern nationwide.
White House spokesperson Taylor Rogers responded by stating that Trump remains focused on lowering costs for working families and enhancing the nation’s well-being. Rogers cited executive actions designed to make homeownership affordable, such as limiting Wall Street’s purchase of single-family homes and reducing construction costs.
What The Poll Shows
The poll results show that 60 percent of respondents feel Trump has not prioritized the country’s most pressing problems. By contrast, 29 percent believe he has set the right priorities, while 11 percent are unsure.
When asked about the most critical issues, 30 percent pointed to inflation and prices, 15 percent to jobs and the economy, and 9 percent to healthcare. A previous poll indicated similar concerns, with inflation, jobs, healthcare, and immigration as top priorities.
The latest survey, taken from June 26 to June 29, 2026, surveyed 1,606 U.S. adults and has a margin of error of 3.2 percent. It found that 28 percent of respondents believe the country is on the right track, while 61 percent disagree, and 11 percent are undecided. This marks a slight decrease from the previous week’s figures.
The poll results may fuel criticism that Trump’s focus does not align with voters’ everyday concerns. The perception that he has overlooked key national issues remains a potential vulnerability, despite the administration’s efforts to emphasize their economic agenda.
Trump’s International Focus
Trump has faced backlash for stating he does not consider Americans’ financial situations when negotiating international agreements, such as with Iran. He emphasized that his primary concern is preventing Iran from acquiring nuclear weapons, dismissing financial considerations.
Democrats have used these comments to argue that Trump is disconnected from the struggles faced by working families. White House Communications Director Steven Cheung defended Trump’s position, asserting the necessity of ensuring national security.
Efforts to Beautify Washington
Parallel to these debates, Trump has concentrated on aesthetic improvements in Washington, D.C. This includes projects near landmarks like the Lincoln Memorial Reflecting Pool. These initiatives have sparked legal challenges and criticism for prioritizing symbolic efforts over addressing economic issues impacting households.
Recently, Trump attributed problems such as algae blooms in the Reflecting Pool to vandalism. He champions these beautification projects, cautioning that vandalism of monuments could result in severe penalties.
Additionally, Democratic Senator Richard Blumenthal has questioned the Trump administration and contractors involved in the Reflecting Pool’s renovations, seeking clarification on the project’s issues and potential links to Trump-associated firms.
