Two masked individuals caused a stir on Wednesday by climbing atop the Empire State Building. They unfurled a banner that read, “when the power of love beats the love of power, the world knows peace.” This incident occurred around noon.
The New York City Police Department’s Emergency Services Unit responded swiftly. The pair subsequently took down the banner and descended from the antenna to a lower platform. In a surprising turn, one of the individuals produced an engagement ring from a backpack and proposed on the spot.
The couple was taken into custody afterward, with charges pending, as confirmed by NYPD officials. Fortunately, no injuries were reported. However, how the duo managed to scale the building is still unclear.
Signs of increased police presence were evident, with approximately 40 officers stationed in front of the Empire State Building. Additionally, officers directed traffic around the area. The entrance on Fifth Avenue, situated between West 33rd and 34th streets, remained blocked. Many pedestrians gathered on nearby corners to watch the events as they unfolded.
The Empire State Building, including its spire and antenna, measures 1,454 feet in height. It is New York City’s fourth-tallest building, the sixth-tallest in the United States, and ranks as the 43rd tallest worldwide.
The incident elicited no immediate response from New York City Mayor Zohran Mamdani. As of now, his office has not issued a statement regarding the public demonstration.
