Attempted Shooting at Hindu Temple Foiled by Police

U.S. Representative Raja Krishnamoorthi and his family were present at a Hindu temple in Aurora when a potential mass shooting incident was reported. On Sunday, authorities arrested a 19-year-old from Palatine, allegedly attempting the attack.

Krishnamoorthi, a Democrat from Schaumburg, expressed his horror at learning the attack aimed at Indian Americans. According to Cook County prosecutors, Alexandros Paporakis attempted to open fire at the temple but was thwarted when his weapon malfunctioned. Later, he is said to have shared his intentions of trying again with co-workers, who reported him to the police.

Authorities took Paporakis into custody Sunday evening on North Baldwin Drive in Palatine. A manifesto titled “Why I Fought: A.K.A. (Aurora Shooter’s Manifesto)” was found, containing extremist and white supremacist ideologies. Police reported discovering weapons, ammunition, tactical gear, and body armor with extremist symbols at his residence.

Paporakis is detained in Cook County Jail on charges of making terrorist threats and unlawful weapon possession. A court appearance is set for October 30.

Krishnamoorthi highlighted the danger of anti-Indian sentiment and white supremacy. He urged serious attention to threats of violence. The Consulate General of India appreciated the swift response from law enforcement and maintains contact with the Indian community.
