The Impact of a ‘Muslims Only’ Swim Party

Aminah Knight had a plan to celebrate a significant Islamic holiday. She wanted to host a unique party for Muslim families in suburban Dallas—at an indoor water park. Her idea was to mark Eid al-Adha with a swim party, but the initial mosque she approached rejected the notion. They felt a swimming event was not appropriate to commemorate the holiday.

Despite this initial setback, Knight, a former public-school teacher from New York City, remained resolute. Her goal was to provide an opportunity for families to enjoy themselves, particularly young women and girls. Knight knew many enjoyed swimming yet felt uncomfortable in American pools due to the full-body swimwear often associated with Middle Eastern traditions.

Determined to make her vision a reality, Knight traveled across North Texas, presenting her event to various mosques within the growing Muslim community. She went as far as creating her own website and promotional flyer. Her efforts bore fruit when hundreds of attendees came to her event.

The water park collaborated with Knight to host the party again the following year. This time, she was able to rent the entire venue, attracting even more participants. As Eid approached again, Knight began preparations for the third annual gathering of Dallas-area Muslims at her swim party.
