The Supreme Court recently ruled states may prevent biological males from participating in girls’ and women’s sports teams. This decision upholds laws in Idaho and West Virginia, with similar legislation in 25 other states. Democratic leaders have largely remained silent on this topic, revealing divisions within the party as the midterm elections approach.
Court’s Decision and Reactions
The ruling delighted Republicans but left progressive Democrats disappointed. Few Democrats have publicly voiced their reactions, and no legislative response has been suggested. Rep. Sarah Jacobs, representing California, affirmed support for trans youth but did not mention specific legislative actions. She co-chairs the Trans Equality Task Force and highlighted the importance of fighting for women and girls, including trans individuals.
House Minority Leader Hakeem Jeffries and the Congressional Equality Caucus also did not propose any legislative steps, despite criticizing the court’s decision on social media. Fox News reached out for comments from Jacobs, Jeffries, and the Equality Caucus but received no response.
Public Opinion and Polls
Surveys show broad opposition to transgender athletes in women’s sports across party lines. A New York Times poll in 2025 indicated nearly 80% of Americans objected to biological males competing in women’s sports, including 70% of Democrats or those with Democratic tendencies.
More centrist Democrats have largely refrained from commenting. Those facing Republican scrutiny, like Rep. Don Davis of North Carolina, issued statements supporting the court’s ruling. Davis emphasized the importance of Title IX in maintaining opportunities for women and girls in sports.
Democratic Leadership Dynamics
Rep. Marie Gluesenkamp Perez from Washington, a member of the Equality Caucus, acknowledged that the trans rights conversation lacks nuance, seeing first-hand the dedication of parents to their daughters’ athletic opportunities. Senate Minority Leader Chuck Schumer, alongside other prominent Democrats, remained quiet on the ruling.
Democrats known for supporting trans rights, like Sen. Ed Markey of Massachusetts, condemned the ruling. Markey linked the decision to discrimination by former President Trump and the MAGA movement. He promised ongoing support for trans athletes.
Sen. Elizabeth Warren voiced similar concerns, attributing hostility to ‘right-wing extremists.’ She reaffirmed her support for trans individuals and vowed to continue the fight.
