Alex Marquardt Joins Al Jazeera English After CNN Exit

Alex Marquardt, formerly of CNN, has confirmed his new role at Al Jazeera English, joining the network based in Washington. Marquardt shared his enthusiasm on social media, expressing admiration for Al Jazeera’s global reporting.

Background of Defamation Case

Marquardt was involved in a significant defamation case alongside CNN in 2025, initiated by U.S. Navy veteran Zachary Young. A Florida jury determined that CNN had defamed Young through a report led by Marquardt, which depicted Young as a dubious profiteer who benefited from Afghan individuals during the U.S. withdrawal from Afghanistan under President Biden’s administration.

Financial Implications of the Case

The jury initially awarded Young $5 million in damages, with CNN later settling for an undisclosed amount. The jury foreman indicated that CNN might have faced punitive damages between $50 million and $100 million.

Following the trial, CNN separated from Marquardt, with insiders linking the move to the costly defamation case. CNN refrained from commenting on personnel decisions.

Marquardt’s Move to Al Jazeera

Al Jazeera, funded by Qatar, launched its English division in 2006. Marquardt will host “This is America,” a daytime show for Al Jazeera English.

Young, interviewed post-trial, expressed no forgiveness toward Marquardt at the time. However, he showed no resentment about Marquardt’s new position, pointing out congruence between Marquardt’s coverage style and Al Jazeera’s newsroom.

Marquardt’s announcement received supportive messages from former CNN colleagues, while Marquardt maintained that his report on Young was not meant to harm.

In March 2022, CNN made an on-air apology after Young threatened legal action. During the trial, Marquardt and CNN staff testified against the need for the apology, with CNN’s senior vice president admitting it was a legal strategy.
