Influence of Democratic Socialists in American Politics
Chad Pergram reports from Capitol Hill on the rising presence of democratic socialists within the political landscape. This movement is seen as a push towards fundamentally altering the United States according to some, including Laura Ingraham.
Melat Kiros’ Impact in Colorado
A notable figure in this trend is 29-year-old Melat Kiros, who achieved a significant victory by defeating a long-standing incumbent in the Colorado primary. Kiros has highlighted several progressive policies, such as abolishing ICE, implementing Medicare for all, and addressing the ‘genocide in Palestine.’
Kiros’ candidacy represents a wave of anti-Israel, far-left candidates gaining traction within the Democratic Party. Her victory occurred in a Denver-area district, where she unseated long-term incumbent Diana Degette.
Controversial Views on Israel
During a recent interview, Kiros suggested that Israel’s actions in the Middle East may inspire attacks on Jewish communities worldwide. This perspective aligns with other far-left candidates who have gained popularity recently. Her stance has not escaped criticism from prominent Democrats, including Colorado Attorney General and gubernatorial candidate Phil Weiser.
“I just spoke with Attorney General Phil Weiser, who won the Democratic primary for governor last night. He is very likely to be Colorado’s next governor, in the same way, that you are very likely to be a member of the Colorado congressional delegation come next year,” noted the host. “He has some real concerns about things that you have said about Israel and, in particular, about the firebombing of Jewish people in Boulder.”
Kiros expressed her willingness to engage in dialogue with Weiser, affirming her commitment to combating antisemitism. She described the Boulder attack as a “horrific” event and emphasized the need for collaboration to address rising hate.
Boulder Incident and Legal Proceedings
On June 1, 2025, Mohamed Soliman targeted a pro-Israel rally in Boulder with incendiary devices. This attack resulted in the death of Karen Diamond and injuries to numerous others. Soliman, disguised as a gardener, was later arrested and pleaded guilty to charges including murder. He was sentenced to life without parole and may still face federal hate crime charges.
Although Soliman denied antisemitic motives, he delivered a critical speech against Zionism during his trial.
Political Responses and Remarks
Kiros’ primary campaign heavily focused on her opposition to Israel, which she underscored in her victory speech by calling to “end the genocide in Palestine.” Her comments and stance have drawn criticism, including from Colorado gubernatorial candidate Phil Weiser.
