Patriotism Unveils During Fourth of July Celebrations in Washington

Patriotism is showcased across the United States with grand displays of American spirit. Big flags, enormous barbecues, and God-and-country themed items like dioramas, beer cozies, or even pet costumes are common sights. Fighter jets streak through the skies, leaving trails of red, white, and blue smoke. Marching bands entertain the crowd. Annually, July 4th transforms hot dog consumption into a competitive homage to America’s independence from monarchy.

Traditionally, the holiday featured embarrassing fashion choices for some, with dad jeans and cropped tops being common attire. Yet, the mood was always friendly and welcoming. People took pride in flaunting patriotic symbols, contributing to a national festivity.

This lightheartedness had an invigorating effect, especially in Washington, where I moved over 30 years ago to join The Washington Post. The city emerged as both inefficient and idealistic, inhabited by driven individuals who picked public service over lucrative careers on Wall Street or in Silicon Valley. Notably, the women in my social circle achieved greatness in areas such as counterterrorism, international aid, and world banking, disciplines that were foreign to me.

During an early summer in Washington, a friend covering the Clinton White House invited me to witness the Fourth of July fireworks from the White House grounds. The spectacle was exceptional. Viewing fireworks over the capital is unique — not due to the sheer scale of the display, but its location. Witnessing red, white, and blue pyrotechnics juxtaposed against iconic landmarks like the White House, the Washington Monument, and the National Mall is unparalleled.

This year’s Fourth of July marks a peak in the yearlong celebration of the nation’s 250th anniversary. Traditional red, white, and blue decorations adorn federal buildings and quaint rowhouses throughout Washington. Oversized flags drape buildings, and visitors to the capital envelop themselves in patriotic attire. The usual tourist activity has exploded into a theatrical exhibition, with holidaymakers outdoing each other sporting U.S.A. emblazoned shirts, flag-striped shorts, and hats studded with stars.
