Iranian Leadership Faces Internal Strife Amid Funeral Proceedings

The absence of Ayatollah Mojtaba Khamenei, the newly appointed supreme leader, has sparked questions within Iranian political circles. It has allowed divisions among leadership to surface. The situation raises concerns about who currently governs the country.

The solemn events of Ayatollah Ali Khamenei’s elaborate, week-long funeral seemed to serve as a rare moment of unity amidst ongoing tensions. Ayatollah Ali Khamenei, killed on the initial day of a conflict with the United States and Israel, was honored by Iran’s leaders and senior military commanders.

The funeral proceedings showcased a united front, with leaders such as the president, the speaker of Parliament, the head of the judiciary, and high-ranking generals from the Revolutionary Guards Corps appearing together. A military band played an anthem, symbolizing solidarity during this period.

However, Ayatollah Mojtaba Khamenei was notably absent. Since his appointment in March, he has remained unseen in public, adding to the speculation about his influence and control.

Prior to the funeral, senior officials and political figures engaged in open disputes over negotiations with the United States. Accusations of delusion, treason, and plotting were rampant. Hassan Rahimpour-Azghadi, a prominent hard-line figure, vehemently opposed any negotiation with the United States, calling for revenge instead.

Ayatollah Mojtaba Khamenei attempted to quell these disputes with a carefully constructed statement. Yet, the statement only intensified dissatisfaction among hard-line supporters. They demand a public appearance or audio statement from the supreme leader as a sign of genuine leadership and control.
