The Milwaukee Brewers achieved a staggering 22-0 victory against the Seattle Mariners, marking the largest shutout in baseball’s modern era. This feat occurred on Tuesday night as Christian Yelich, David Hamilton, Luis Lara, and Jake Bauers hit significant home runs to bolster the Brewers’ success.
This win aligns the Brewers with two other teams who have managed a 22-0 shutout since 1901. Previously, the Pittsburgh team defeated the Chicago Cubs with the same score on September 16, 1975, and Cleveland overwhelmed the New York Yankees on August 31, 2004.
Jake Bauers had a remarkable start for the Brewers, scoring the first run after a dynamic play where he doubled with two outs in the first inning. Although Randy Arozarena’s throw was quick, Bauers skillfully maneuvered around catcher Cal Raleigh, leading to a dropped ball and a successful score for Bauers.
Home runs played a critical role in the Brewers’ triumph. Christian Yelich launched a three-run homer in the fifth inning, extending the lead to 6-0. Later, David Hamilton contributed with a deep homer in the sixth, followed by an impressive two-run shot from Bauers, pushing the score to 11-0.
In the eighth inning, Milwaukee’s offensive prowess continued, scoring nine times against Leo Rivas, an infielder for the Mariners. Luis Lara’s homer during this inning marked the first of his career, adding to the Brewers’ historic win.
The Brewers’ pitchers also displayed commendable performances. Kyle Harrison, contributing significantly despite previous challenges, limited the Mariners to only two hits over five innings. Shane Drohan and Grant Anderson followed with strong pitching, while catcher Gary Sánchez deftly completed the shutout by expertly handling the ninth inning, despite two hits.
Pitcher statistics highlighted individual achievements, with David Hamilton achieving a personal record of four RBIs. Yelich and Lara also scored four RBIs each, showcasing their offensive capabilities. Garrett Mitchell notably added four hits, further driving the team’s success.
The Brewers, leading the major league with a record of 78-48, matched their franchise record for runs in this remarkable game.
