Richmond, California, long known for its progressive politics, finds itself at the center of a debate about Israel and antisemitism. Led by Democratic socialist Mayor Eduardo Martinez, the city recently passed a ceasefire resolution concerning Israel’s war in Gaza following the Oct. 7 Hamas attacks. This resolution has sparked controversy within the community, creating tensions among Jewish residents and leaders.
Community Reactions and Concerns
Stephen London, a Jewish resident of Richmond, expressed surprise at the city council’s focus on international issues, questioning the relevance to local politics. Prior to the resolution, he had little interest in local affairs. The resolution accused Israel of ethnic cleansing and collective punishment, causing concern among Jewish community members who viewed it as aligning more with Hamas’ narrative than as a critique of Israeli policies.

Tyler “Tye” Gregory, CEO of the Jewish Community Relations Council (JCRC) Bay Area, criticized the resolution. He argued it glamorized Hamas and demonized Israel, especially as Jewish residents mourned the attacks.
Mayor Martinez’s Actions
In August 2025, Mayor Martinez attended the People’s Conference for Palestine in Detroit. He wore a hat with the slogan “death, death to the IDF” and made statements comparing himself to Palestinians. This further intensified criticism, particularly after his response to the Hanukkah attack in Bondi Beach, Australia. His LinkedIn posts suggested that the massacre was a “false flag attack” by Israel, leading to calls for his resignation by the JCRC.
These posts were deemed “dangerously antisemitic” by the JCRC, which pointed to a pattern of behavior disregarding Jewish community safety and dignity. Following backlash, Martinez apologized on Facebook, admitting he shared content he hadn’t fully understood.
“I deeply regret my actions and am committed to doing better,” Martinez stated, acknowledging his responsibility to represent all residents of Richmond.
Political Fallout and Future Elections
Reactions to Martinez’s apology were mixed. Some supported his stance against Israel, while others criticized his lack of genuine remorse for promoting antisemitic theories. As the controversy unfolded, Martinez prepared for reelection. However, the Richmond Progressive Alliance (RPA) chose to support Councilmember Claudia Jimenez instead, possibly to distance from the mayor’s recent controversies.
Gregory from the JCRC emphasized the importance of strategic community responses when dealing with elected officials like Martinez. He advised working alongside them when they fulfill their civic duties properly while stepping up against antisemitic actions.
Broader Context
The debates in Richmond are part of a larger trend as issues concerning Israel and antisemitism surface in local politics across progressive cities. In New York, for example, Mayor Zohran Mamdani faced criticism for his stance on Israel during his campaign.
Despite tensions, London believes that Richmond’s situation pales in comparison to challenges faced in other cities, like New York.
